I got the 54' 235 engine running the other day and noticed the press-in oil galley plug leaks. This is located in the front of the engine next to the generator. I ran the truck for a 20-minute break-in so it was good and warm and it still didn't want to seal.

I just now replaced it with another plug and it too leaks. The sleeve it presses into looks to be in good shape with no apparent grooves or scratches in it. My question is, should I try it again and coat the thing with some blue lock-tite, or possibly get a bigger size. The one that originally came out was 19/32.

Probably wouldn't hurt to coat it with a sealer (permatex) or similar before installing.

Later 235's are threaded for pipe plugs. Probably hard to tap with the engine together and in place.

Thanks for the input guys. I will give it one more try and if it doesn't work out I will thread it.

Indian Head sealer works well here. It is similar in smell and non-hardening properties as permatex 2. It is a liquid and comes in a brown bottle that has a brush built into the cap.

wow, the PC police still allow that to be marketed under that name? That is what my dad always used, I haven't been able to find it recently, I thought they removed it because of the name.

You need to rent a moving van and move away from there, Jed. Its worse than California and they ain't got no Injun Head. I found some at NAPA.

Tried it again....this time with permatex around the plug before I put it in. Let it set up for 24 hours, then smeared some silicone around the edge of the plug where it meets the block. Let that sit another 24 before starting. Still leaks.

My concern here is that it seems there is a sleeve in the block that this plug goes into so I'm not confident in tapping this properly without leaving metal shavings. The hole in the block that presumably leads from this galley back to the pan is almost directly behind this plug so the shavings make me nervous. I will do it if I have to but would rather try the plug more time.

Update...4th attempt worked. Used a coat of red locktite in the block first and allowed it to set a bit, then coated the plug itself with more red locktight before installing. That plug will never see the light of day again.

I just read this and locktite was my first choice.


And not to pick on, but to educate.
Galley :1 a low flat ship with sails and oars. 2 a kitchen in a ship or aircraft.

Just type define oil galley into google, you will find it is a misspelling.

Galley is surely the wrong word, but, oddly, the Americam Engine Rebuilders Association also has it wrong .
