It looks like a notation indicating the ground wire is the one that is broken. This should be all that is needed wire wise shouldn't it.

Hmmmm..'expand'! That sure makes things sharp and clear. Good picture. Someone has been 'into' the sending unit lately by the looks of the Allen head cap screws.

There was a thread awhile ago dealing with the fuel sender and wiring in a TF rig. I don't remember the particulars, and can't seem to find a wiring diagram for a '56 truck on TOCP.
The standard wiring for a AD fuel gauge would be battery power (switched) to one side of the fuel gauge, and the other side wired to the sending unit. Is it different on the TF trucks.

only one wire to he gauge and one to gnd
the gauge has he oher wire + or hot side that reads thru the sender to let you know just how much fuel you have. then the gauge goes to gnd.
always make sure the gnds are good everywhere:
cab to frame.
frame to tank.
engine to frame.
if running an electric puller/pusher fan, rediator frame to frame.
tank to cab.
