This is my first post on here just found the site a couple days ago. My truck is a 64 c10 short wide, 383 and a turbo 400.

My question is, what is the easiest way to find out which wires are for my ignition starter? I am unable to get the starter out of the colum, it is a colum from what I believe a 70's chevy. The situation is Im putting in a push button starter and a ignition switch. Any help would be apreciated. Thankyou.

Welcome to the Stovebolt. This is just a guess, but isn't the actual switch located mid-point on the column, and only rod actuated by the key switch.

If this is the case, you can see the mechanical switch and the corresponding wires exiting it.

your right it is actuated by a rod, so i pulled it off, there are four wires. i thought there was only supposed to be 3...? Anyways I traced them back and heres what I got.

Purple- to the starter

pink- distrib.

brown- fuse box

red- goes to a plug behind the dash, right above the brake pedal.

Any help would be great. thankyou.

You have got it all figured out. The purple is the start wire. The pink is ignition. Brown is accessories. Red is the hot lead.

ok no im lost, and moroso tech line was no help. i got that the start wire and batt wire go to the bump switch, but where do i wire the ignition and acc? i have several toggles to do this. but how? thanks for any reply.

Your ignition and accessories both need power from the red wire. I have no idea why you would want everything on separate switches. But if you insist, the ideal way would be with a terminal block. Run a separate wire from the terminal block to each switch.

Why not just buy a replacement keyed ignition switch?

Well there are several reasons why I want a toggle starter switch one of which is I have a steering colum from a newer vehicle and I dont know what year it came from, and in the stock location is a horn button.

But i think I got it now. Let me know if this will work

On the bumper switch i have the hott and starter wires, i then have a hot jumper wire going to the next toggle, and on that toggle i have the acc. and ignition wires on the same post. Will this work? thanks for any reply.

red to discharge side of the amp meter for the power supply to the key switch. brown to any accessory switches through the fuses. you can daisy chain the switches but i recommend using separate fuses for each.

New problem, I went and got a universal starter swich, hooked up the wires, turned the key to acc. and the starter began cranking. The switch has four posts, 3 of which are maked, the 3 that are marked are Batt. Acc. and ign. the fouth i believe would have to be the starter. I switched the starter and and ign. wires and still the same problem. Could it be the switch? or am I missing something? Thankyou.

Maybe it's just an ignition switch. Does it have three positions plus a momentary position that is at the fully clockwise position?

"Wring" the switch with an ohm meter. Put one lead on the "batt" terminal. Turn key to left, you should have continuity to "Acc" only. Turn key to right and you should have continuity to "acc" and "ign". Hold key in start position and you should have continuity to "ign" and "start". If not it's the switch. Sounds more like it's wired wrong though.

ok, it ended up being a bad starter switch, but I combined the switch and my bump toggle switch and now the truck is running. Its been a while, I was pretty stoked when I heard the 383. Thanks for the input.
