At the risk of sounding "real stupid", did all of these engines have oil filters, because mine doesn't. I've been around and worked on a lot of cars but I've never encountered this.

Nope, some do and some don't, all depends on the previous owner(s) and what they wanted.

An oil filter on a 216 is a waste of money. The place the supply hose and the return hose attach both have oil pressure at them. This means there is very little flows through the filter except maybe at an idle.

Thanks Dave. I learned to drive in a 53 but that part didn't concern me. my only concern was if my Dad was within range of hearing me throw gravel as I took off!

Interesting! So has anyone figured out a work-around to get the oil filtered?

I have to both agree with Dave and on this rare occasion disagree with him. While both connections have pressure there is in fact oil moving through the filter. IMHO any filtration is better than none. However adding a filter does not mean you can put off the oil changes.

I've got a filter on my 216, it was on it when I got it so I continue to use it.
I understand that it's a bypass filter and as Dave says it probably doesn't filter except when at idle but since I'm useing detergent oil I like that theres "some" filtering going on.
I also like that it adds another qrt of oil to the engine which is good in my case as I haven't gotten around to replaceing all the worn & leaky seals yet .

Just look at the dipstick. With a bypass filter the oil looks like it just came out of the can. I would use one on any one of mine. The only advantage of a full flow is that it catches any particles before it reaches the engine. Big trucks use both.

In my search to find one, I see them mounted in several locations, one being right on the manifold. Is there a best location? A match the 41' dealer install?
I am going to install one before it goes on the open road.

Since they were added on later the manifold is the most common place. Although military trucks did mount a large can similar to an S-2 on the firewall, passenger side, and route hard line to it.

Filters are still readily available for large and small sized cans. About $7-12 depending where you buy.

If I were to buy a truck that did not have a filter I doubt I would add one,I would drop the pan and remove the valve and side covers to make sure its clean and then change the oil every 1000 to 1500 miles,not to sound like a tightwad but the filter I get for my 37 is getting close to 15 dollars now and just not worth it for how little it does and how little I drive it.

??? On all the 235's and 261's I have the bypass return is simply a hole thru the side of the block to dump it back in the pan without any pressure involved. Once when changing oil I forgot to tighten the canister lid any more than hand tight and fired it up. At the rate the puddle on the floor grew I knew mine was moving plenty of oil at idle.

On splash engines the return hose from the filter is attached to a port that feeds oil to the dippers.
I once was pumping up oil pressure on a rebuilt 216 and forgot to install a plug at that port. Needless to say the other side of my shop was well oiled.
