I read the one post but hope someone has a simple technique to use hand held starter on my '59 with a foot switch. I don't have anyone to sit in the truck. Any ideas please let me know.
thanks..........jeff

a19593200,

Not sure I understand the question, but with a foot activated starter, there is no solenoid to pull the Bendix in, so manpower (foot power) is the ONLY way..a remote starter switch will not work. eek

Jeff - if you're trying to tweak the position rather than start it, just put a bar between the starter button and the floor, and lever it down - I guess you could hold it to actually start the engine, but "think safety"!

Man, I wish you guys weren’t so shy and would use a real name so I didn’t have to address you as 4567854345 or @$%&*&^%$ or what all!
I think your talking about the hand held pushbutton switches that the mechanics use to bump or crank the engine over while they are working under the hood. These are only made for engines with solenoids where it is activated by low voltage. This is a simply a switch that is connected across the low voltage of the solenoid just as you ignition switch is.
In the case of a truck with no solenoid, you could mount a second foot switch in a box to be placed on the garage floor/ground to engage the starter but you would have to run some pretty hefty (read battery) cables leading to it. To handle the current, that’s the purpose of the solenoid.

Use a broomstick wedged between the toeboard and bellhousing and push down on the starter switch.

Before using this technique, be sure to turn the key to the start position. Don't ask my why I bother to point out something so obvious grin

Jeff Nelson,

I'm not sure I understand your post. Wouldn't the key switch in this rig have only OFF and ON, and wouldn't you want to make sure the switch was positioned in OFF.

EDIT. My assumption was that he is trying to JOG the engine without starting it.

More importantly be sure it's in neutral. Key on for spark testing and key off for valve adjustment.

You're right, I should have said ON rather than START. I assumed since the post was about a remote starter he wanted to try to start the truck from under the hood. As Curt says, if you want to start the truck, the ign. switch is on, if you are just wanting to turn the engine over, the ign. switch is off. But in either position, be sure the truck is in neutral.

I might be confused on this thread...it has happened before. The 'stomp' starter not only closes the starter switch, but mechanically engages the 'overunning clutch'.

No electrical lashup will do this...the shift lever on the starter needs to be depressed by some mechanical means to drive the overunning clutch into the ring gear. eek

you pretty much got it Stuart, and that's why I [and others] suggested using the bar on the button - works for me, "jogging" or starting - it's Denny that's a little confused ... or confusing grin

Ahaaaa!..I guess my confusion was about whether folks were recommending 'broomsticking' the starter switch proper, or 'broomsticking' the shift lever, which would engage the drive gear AND close the starter switch. smile

Correct'o mundo, must not have had my thinking hat on guys. Funny how you get off on a tangent bout something (solenoids) and forget about the obvious lack of one. Broom stick sounds like the best option.
Boy can I see a bunch of room for problems here, like a Advanced Design climbing the back wall of the garage!!!

If your just wanting to bump the motor like for setting the points just put the truck in high gear with the key off and gently push the truck forward or backward to get the crank where you want it. This method works really well as most starter bumps are to little or to much

I've alway used the 'Johnson Bar' (Harbor Freight) cheapo GIANT screw drive, and pry down on the starter button. Also you can swap out that old floor starter for one with a solonoid, then you can use the hand held start button.
