Have a 56 235 engine and a 12 si alternator and I know I can use the 224l kit to mount it up but has any one used the old generator bracket and modified it with different spacers etc to make it work? If you did can you send pictures or descriptions of what you did, that would be great.

I didn't modify the original bracket so much as I used the original as a pattern to make a modified version to work with an alternator. Not much to it, just added a tab at the approximate thickness of the alternator ear ended. For the top, I made an adjustable mount using Heim joints (1 with RH threads, the other with LH threads) a few nuts (again, 2 RH, 2 LH), and short peice of stainless tube. That not only allows for adjustment, but also for the slight misalignmnet due to where the mounting ear sits in relation to the block.
I'll see if I can get some good pix for you of what I have setup.

Seems to me all you need are some spacers to take up the extra room. I helped a fellow a few years back and had no problem adapting it over. We even used the same factory wire. The only modification was hooking wires together at the regulator, since the alternator had a built in regulator.

I did on my 54, 3100. Welded a piece to the bottom of the bracket so I could move the bracket closer to the belt and drilled new hole in bracket for mounting on block. You need to measure thing good, because there is not much room for error here. I think you need to space out the pulley on the alternator a little too (maybe 1/8 inch). And yes, you will need to add spacers for the alternator to fit the bracket, but that is the easy part.

I was already to install this, but then just had generator re-wired to 12 volts, so now the bracket is setup for both.

American Classic sells an alternator bracket for the 235/261 that is really nicely made. Now that I have one, I can make one that looks just like it, but for the 60 bucks or less it cost, it has both pieces and now you can move on to the other stuff. Purchase the steel, then work the steel to make these pieces for less than that! I installed it the other day and its really nice to be able to move on. I also got the bolt kits from Totally Stainless. Very pleased with our vendors these days!
