My recent purchase of a 64 c10 has a stock 3spd that is growling in 1st and pops out of 1st at times. Any suggustions on the best route to take? I'm not against replacing it with same trans, but so far the only type I've found locally is the newer or older long tailshaft style. If I have to change driveshaft length and yoke for longer style I may as well consider other options like auto, 4 spd muncie, s10,or ?. Any ideas on the way to go? Thanks,

A couple questions:

1.0 Will you be using it as a truck? By that I mean hauling loads or towing with it?

2.0 V-8 or I-6?

3.0 Ok with your existing mileage or looking for something better?

4.0 What's your rear axle gear and what is the diameter of your rear tires?

Let me know if you need a new "used" one. I just pulled mine and replaced it with an OD. Not sure if 64 is compatible with 62.

It has a 305 v8. I don't plan on hauling much. I don't know what rear ratio is. Probably 3:70?

I realize the newer saganaw is synro and stronger, but requires some changes to the driveshaft yoke and length. Not a big deal, I guess. Just want to get it to driver stage until I figure what my long term plans will be.
Bats62Chevy: I think up to 67 works. My truck trans is 16" lg. I think some early and later ones are 23" lg. Which do you have?

Popping out of 2nd or 3rd is usually the syncro. Popping out of 1st is generally more serious like a worn cluster gear and slider gear. All of the above parts are expensive to replace if purchased new. However, these transmissions can be picked up at swap meets relatively cheap. The (4 bolt side cover)long tail housing units and the short ones are basically the same the only difference being the main shaft and tail housing. If you find a long tail housing trans for a reasonable price you may be able to make one out of the two and use your tail housing.

I have rebuilt engines, but never taken a trans apart. I guess mine would be a good one to practice on since it seems to need help. If I can take it apart and put it back together sucessfully then maybe I can try to mix and match parts with a long tail shaft trans.

Trans are fairly simple to rebuild. I've done many autos and manuals. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Take pictures before you disassemble, inside and out. It will save you some time.

I can explain it to you, I can't understand it for you.

Thanks for the advice. I have learned through the years that I have a good memory, it just doesn't last long. Therefore I rely on pictures and I have even video taped my builds just to have something to fall back on, becaues sleep sometimes erases my memory. HA. I just had a operation Monday and the DR says no straining for a few weeks, so I guess I just be getting on the internet to read up on how to articles.
