The fuel pump on my 6 cyl 270ci gmc motor is spittin' fuel out of a small hole located in the base of the pump, down where the mounting bolts are. It's a factory hole, diameter is about the size of the lead in a pencil. Not sure why it's there, no idea why it would be spittin' out fuel when it's running- any ideas?

Likely a small split in the diaphragm. Replace it before it leaves you stranded.

Just to clarify - that hole is there to tell you your pump is leaking. It's a telltale weep hole. All mechanical fuel pumps have one.

Make sure you check your engine oil for fuel smell. If any doubt, change it and the filter.

I let my carb sit with Ethanol and had issues after. If you drive your vehicle daily "im told" you won't have issues but if it sits you may consider using ethanol free fuel.

Umm... if its a mechanical fuel pump there is no need to vent it.. the base (with the arm) is open to the interior of the block, which IS open to atmosphere (via the PCV or simple draft tube).

Also, the location of this weep hole is not at the lowest point or any point where fuel would readily pool to indicate a problem.

Is there anything in a shop manual about this hole????? Just curious.
