I am electrically challenged so wiring is done by the monkey see monkey do method at my house.I have a stock 57 3100 with a 235 (newly rebuilt). My factory temp gauge is dead so I decided that I would install a new under dash gauge so I could actually see what the engine temp is. I understand where the sender wire goes-to the new sender. The ground to a screw under the dash. Where should I wire the positive? Is there a fuse box on this truck? Should I wire it to the ignition switch? I haven't even looked at the light hook up on this yet.I really want to see what my engine temp is. I haven't hooked one of these up in 30 years!! :confused: | | |

I have read posts that indicate a fuse box on your '57 was dependent on factory supplied electrical options.
It seems like you have the wiring down quite well. The power for the gauge must be switched by the key to turn the gauge off when you shut the truck off...where this happens is up to you.
It could be tied to the key switch, or somewhere more convenient that is switched. This would require a search on your part.
The gauge illumination would, as you state, come off the headlight switch, or a more convenient place that is switched with the dashlights.
You are sort of 'tagging' this gauge into the existing system, so as long as the connection point has the the proper function, it can be where it is most convenient for you to 'crawl' to.
It would probably be prudent to install a small inline fuse in your new wiring to the gauge.

I can't find a fuse box and can't find one shown on a wiring diagram. I think I will try the key switch. I still have to go through the mess of changing the sender then I will get to this wiring. I will need to put in a harness in the next year or two as this wiring is really old and brittle.
