so I "T'd" at the filter and went direct to the side oil plug. The problem is that I now have oil squirting like a gusher out of the front half rockers and next to nothing out of the rear rocker set. What's going on? I also changed the tar black oil and put in a new filter and oil and the oil turned black almost immediately. If the supply holes are put on the top it can cause squirting. They should go down. There could be other scenarios but I would start there.

That might be why you didn't have adequate oil to the rockers in the first place. You can knock out the end plugs to ease the cleaning process. They are like really small freeze plugs and can be driven back into place after cleaning the shafts.

I can blame my son at least, he was the one that put the assembly on. But when I got it corrected I found a bent push rod.
