47-53 GMC

Is there a size number on the sides of the hood?

Most likely you will need the code off the Vehicle ID plate?

Maybe Spanky or crenwelge will post advice?

Hy spanners and guys, I'm pretty sure it's a 1951 (turn down door handles and vent windows) and probably a 400 and up series.

Looks like a '47, or '48 model, with '51 doors. '47, & '48 models had no inside cab fuel tank, so no fuel spout was on the passenger side below the belt-line. 1951 was the only year for both vent glass, & pull down door handles. It's going to be either a 450 series 3 ton, or 470 series 3 1/2 ton. Should be a "GMC Service Parts Identification" tag on the back of the glove box lid, with all of the trucks info., such as engine size, transmission type, axle type, & type brakes. Neat truck. Where was it located ?.

well guys i havn,t posted anything for awhile as i,m still awaiting,,,
it been delayed a couple of times firstly at the shippers as they had to remove the fifth wheel to allow something else to be stacked in the container with it ,
then the ship was so slow,, then it lost engine power coming out of the port of hamburg and ran aground,,,,,and had to be towed back to port with three tugs,,its now in rotterdam where the container is being off-loaded to be put on a feeder ship (smaller vessel) to come into the uk at grangemouth docks,,,its probably missed the feeder ship due to being delayed so will have to wait for the next one thats available ..
so i may just see my truck sometime in the next few weeks ..
if i,m lucky..
it,s been a long agonising wait....

Hy spanners, I think some of the extra stuff in the cab is a tach, a turn signal switch, an air brake hand valve, an air pressure gauge, and the remnants of a dash fan I think.

Spanners, you definitely deserve an award for perseverance in regards to getting your vintage iron home. I think your story might make a great saga or feature article. Hey, you have a little time to kill before your truck is actually in your grasp and the tear down fun begins.
Hope you get your truck soon.

well the container is on the docks at rotterdam dosn,t look like it,ll be on tonights sailing of the ,feeder vessel,, but we can hope..the next ,feeder,, sails on sunday evening,,so about a week to 10 days and she,ll land in the uk about 300 miles from home then its paperwork time to get her registered with DVLA the uk version of youre DMV, that can take anything from 14 days to 6 weeks
i have a freind that has a yard / workshop at the docks where she will be landing so she,ll stay there untill the paperwork is done just incase the DVLA orders an inspection,
then my mate jim will fetch her down to me ..
allthough i may go up to jim,s and have a day doing bits on her so that she,ll drive off his transporter and around the back of my property to her new home ..

things are getting even better ,,
jim unloaded the container today in the pouring rain ,,
he got a battery and a can of petrol (gasoline ,,lol,,) and with a wire to the coil she fired straight up with good oil pressure etc .
the only down side is the original vin plate has gone missing in the past and no sticker in the glove box door so we still dont know the correct model that she is ..
the question now is ,,where else can we look for identification numbers ,, especially to determine the exact model for uk registration (DVLA)

You might look on the outside of the right front frame rail, near a shackle, truck SN might be stamped there. Stamped # on right side of engine on a machined pad, just behind the distributor, engine SN starts w/ displacement, i.e., 270xxxx.

Nice truck

well we cant find any numbers other than the engine number ,A270791070. but jims still looking,,,
what we really need to know now,,, is what the unladen weight of a 450 or 470 semi tractor would be ?
and if possible the gross vehicle weight,, and the gross combined weight ,,(i.e semi unit and trailer maximum )
we need these figures/weights so that we can fillout some paper work for the uk registration process ,, the weights dont need to be 100% exact ,just near enough . i thought id read and copied/saved them from some old sale litreture but i cant find it ,
thanks,,
,mike,
