At the moment my ol' Rottenchester 1 bbl on the 261 is doing okay, but experience has taught me it won't be long before I'm tearing it down again. I know absolutely zero about carburetion but I do know I want something else on top of my manifold. Funds are extremely tight due to low income and high medical bills at present but I really want to get another carb that will match up to the 261 and give me reasonable performance and gas mileage. Any suggestions?

Try the Holly/Weber progressiv carb.

Tom Langdon at Stovebolt Co. sales them for 65$ and the milage you get out of it is good for your budget.

Unless you wish to change manifolds, I would suggest using a single barrel carb. For the 261, a Zenith 228 series from a GMC 270 would be an excellent choice; as would one of the size 3 Stromberg universals; or possibly a Carter YF from a Foorrdd 300-6.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

Carbking,

Do these choices work on a 235 with a 1 bbl Rochester? Does it take alot of modification of the linkage, throttle cable, & choke cable?

With the 235, would suggest the aftermarket YF which Carter made specifically to work on the 235. (See the thread 'Carter Chevrolet YF carburetors').

It makes good economic sense for a manufacturer to offer replacement units for the more common product, so Carter offered replacements for the YF replacements to replace the Rochesters on the 216 and 235. I have not seen any indication that Carter offered a direct replacement for the 261.

Generally, a manufacturer will have more resources to spend on engineering a replacement unit than the average hobbyist. When possible, I like to use a unit which has been specifically engineered for the application.
