I have an AC Delco S-2 filter. The big one. That is why the filters that my friends keep telling me to use just floats around in the big deep hole. Thanks to Pat Doonan I have the part number I need. Thanks to all who help on this site. FYI the filter is Fram C31PL available at the local FLAPS. Makes you wanna smile.

The filter case has a drain on the bottom that and a bit of hose makes the messy part of the oil change so much less messy. Mine has a brass valve that works just fine. So I wanted to keep it and be able to use it. And the extra oil it holds hurts nothing. Better than trying to get a quart of oil out with rags and a can. Just drain and go.

Then I put in 2 more quarts and check the level on the dip stick. Seems to be OK. The 5 minute run lets the canister fill and I don't have to mess with the filter after I have cleaned it all up. If you don't get the lid on just right it will leak like crazy. So when that lid is on I like to leave it alone. Hope this helps.

It depends on how/where you oil filter canister returns oil to the block. Some empty at the bottom of the canister and some empty higher up the canister.
My by-pass canisters empty higher up the canister.
After removing the filter, sucking out the oil, and putting in the new filter:
- Fill the engine with specified amount of oil (5 qts).
- Fill the 1-qt oil canister with a 1-qt of oil (fill the 2-qt canister with 2 qts of oil).
- Start and run the truck for several minutes.
- Turn off the engine, clean up, and have a home-made beer.
- Check the oil level, and top up as necessary.
