OK I know there have been other posts on this. Original bearings are expensive! If you can find them. $80 plus for just one inner bearing and over $50 for the outer. And that is each! Add the seal and new dust caps and you are headed towards $200. So I see that others have used "timken" type tapered roller bearings. $119 plus shipping. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/1947-59-Chevy-Pick-Up-Tapered-Roller-Bearing-Conversion,24928.html
So do these work? Any issues with the install? I would rather hear the rants before I spend the money. Lets talk about it. Thanks in advance.

I can get the original ball type at my local NAPA - not cheap, but take care of them and they'll likely last longer than the rest of the truck even if you use it daily .... the rollers can work, but they're not an exact dimensional match, and some folks here have reported failures - they're really only recommended if you're putting on disc brakes

red58: Found an early post from you. Got good numbers, Thanks and at NAPA so you helped a bunch. Just FYI I will repost with thanks to red58.
1/2 ton front wheel bearing 1947-1957: Inner, NAPA Part number,PGB PB52
Outer, PGB PB67
Seal 18772 Prices are close to the Timken set and these are the original "ball" type. And to top it off, Local store listed them as in stock. Gonna go shopping. Just an aside: They have a clutch set, in stock complete with friction disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing and an alignment tool for about $160.00. In stock! I am feeling a bit better about my local parts shops.

You will be surprised how much your local FLAPS can help you IF there is the right associate behind the counter.

As for the tapered roller bearings, I have them in my truck and have never had an issue with over 10,000 miles on them. Keep them maintained like the original bearings (packed with grease annually) and keep the hub nut at the proper torque (33 ft-lbs) and they will provide a lifetime of use.

Sweet,
Do you know the part numbers of the tapered roller bearing to convert to? This for a 54 Chevy 3100.

Thanks,
awk
