My question is, is the bottom edge of the door skin welded to the inner door or is it just folded over?

Once you remove the paint, you should feel a little dimple which is probably the spot weld. I did this for a couple of patch panels. Dreading doing it to the bed to remove the spot welded angle pieces on the sides.

Once I ground through the fold, the left over piece on the inside of the door came off easily. But, it is possible that was a symptom of the rust. I would most concerned about welding in the door bottom skin patch panel and not warping the door skin. When that happens, good luck. | | |
