Well its in now but I have another problem and would like your advise. There is a small pull on the battery. When I remove the ground strap and use my test light in series between the strap and the ground post I can light the light (something is grounded). If I remove the wires from the alternator the light goes out. My question is: Is there a short in this alternator? Thanks in advance for any advise you can send my way.

If you remove the battery (big) wire from the alt. by itself do you loose the draw? If so sounds like the alt. is the problem. But double check and make sure that the Big wire off the alt. dosn't go to anything else. Also check to make sure you hooked up the other 2 wires correctly. I know that it has been posted that you can hook up your alt. bypassing the key switch, if you do you can have an alternator that stays ennergized with the key off or have an engine that wont turn off.
I didn't do it, no one saw me do it, you can't prove anything! "Bart Simpson"

I should think that if the ign switch or the ampmeter were shorted the draw would still be there as the ground source would still be there. But am I correct in my thinking that there should be no continuity to gound thru the alternator?

If you like to fix things youself you can check it & replace it yourself. Diodes pass current only one way. If you hook an ohm meter or self powered test light to each one you should get continuity one way & reverse the polarity & get no continuity. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

When I get a chance to bounce the ideas off someone with knowledge of the equipment it really helps. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks Tony | | |
