I have a 61 1/2 ton that was changed for a generator to an alternator before I purchased it. Now I am having trouble with the external regulator. I have a newer alternator from an 81 chevy. Is changing from an external regulator to an alternator with an internal regulator difficult? I know hardly anything about electrical work so please keep it simple.

It's really not hard to do. Get rid of the old regulator, and the 3 or 4 wires that are with it. Run a 10# gauge wire from the starter sol. post where the + battery cable is hooked up... up to the battery post on the new alt. There should be a flat 2 wire plug on the alt, with a#1 and a #2 mark buy it, Hook up the #2 wire to the same post on the back of the alt. that you put that heavy wire from the starter on. The #1 wire should go to the acc. side fo your ign. switch. Thats it.If you have any questions, call me at 319-752-1036 ,Larry

Sounds easy to do. My only question would be how would #1 wire excite the alternator if the key switch wasn't turned to 'accessory'.

61Apache,
I've found a website that has great electrical tech tips. Its called: http://www.madelectrical.com/electrical-tech.shtml
It has good overall reading, but the article called CHEVY Main Electrical Power System is a must read for your situation. grin
Best of luck,
Dave

Stuart, Stuart, Stuart-

The accessory position is also enabled in the run position, but not conversely. Putting the wire on the accessory position makes sure that the engine doesn't run on from alternator power when you switch it off.

61apache,

I have a thought...it might be wrong, but I'll mention it anyway.

With your old externally regulated system, #4 on the regulator should have been the feed from the key and charge indicator light, if you had one.

If you hooked your new #1 wire to this wire, you wouldn't have to dig under the dash, plus you would have the idiot light function as before.

This light would offer the resistance necessary to stop any run-on.

Your old alternator should have had a large power lead that could just be connected to the new alternator.

Your sensing wire...#2 could wrap around as hot rod indicated and attach to the power lug.

Sure hope this is right!!

Stuart

Thanks Stuart, I was wondering If a good underhood connection point for the #1 wire existed. Thanks for your help.
