on a 54 if the grill was painted could/would it of been painted body color with the inside gray (exception red)

or all gray

Unless it was the optional chrome 1954 grill (painted white on inside of center rib and bottom rib), the grills were painted as you describe: the body color and Thistle Gray inside ribs for all but one exterior color.

Thistle Gray inside ribs for all colors except Commercial Red, which had Argent Silver inside ribs.

Any ideas on the chrome grills. I see some with a painted lower horizontal. Was that for 3/4 ton? Larger only the center horizontal chromed? I have a half ton, I see it done where it is all chrome and some where the bottom is painted. Trying to get to what would be original correct.

The bottom was painted on the chrome grille package.

Here is the only original factory chrome grill I have ever personally owned. This came off a farm fresh truck that was never modified and had spent at least a decade disassembled in a garage. As stated above you can clearly see the painted bottom.

great photo. I recently bought some original sales brochures. Very nice to see the grill and how painted. Same as yours.
