Mine is basically flush with the surround piece but this one pictured here sticks out 6-8 inches. Did the grilles change sometime between 48 and 53? The early versions used the big truck grille that was mounted to the frame. The later versions used a different small truck grille that was mounted to the sheetmetal. I can't remember the exact year break...I think the late '47-49 and then '50 and later. This is for 1/2 through 1 ton trucks of course.

I will have to have it verified with the state patrol.
