I just went and looked at a 48 GMC 1 ton and the grille sticks out a LOT more than my 53 grille. Mine is basically flush with the surround piece but this one pictured here sticks out 6-8 inches. Did the grilles change sometime between 48 and 53? The truck looks to be all original so I don't think there has been any "engineering" going on.

Yes, they changed. The early versions used the big truck grille that was mounted to the frame. The later versions used a different small truck grille that was mounted to the sheetmetal. I can't remember the exact year break...I think the late '47-49 and then '50 and later. I'm sure someone else will chime in with an exact year.

47 and 48 use the 3 bar grille with the much more pronounced uprights, as well as a completely different front bumper. 49-55.1 are all the same grille and share the front bumper with 47-55.1 chevy trucks. This is for 1/2 through 1 ton trucks of course.

Thanks, I think i'm gonna buy that truck and do a stock restore. It was originally red.

Checked the "VIN" which is the motor number against the title from Nebraska. I will have to have it verified with the state patrol.

Obvious typo, but what are the chances that it will give me problems?

both those numbers are the same, as long as the 'ell' on the engine looks anything like the one
