VIN charts for 1960 - 1964 show a 6th position of Z = Fremont while my early build '60 has the letter O in that position. I've asumed for some time that this was a carryover from '59 when O = Oakland.
This rig was the 918th unit off the line & was titled in Nov. of '59 so it's eary production.
I believe Oakland & Fremont were part of the same complex, but does anybody know if the production shifted mid new model year of was this just a matter of getting the 'Z' stamp in place of the 'O'?
Also, any idea of when the change took place?
Long live the bolters!

trucks were assembled at a number of plants, no reason yours wasn't assembled where it says it was, Oakland didn't close down until 63, after Fremont was fully operational

I was wondering about the change in mid to early 1960 as well. What point did the factory stop production of the stainless trim below the rear window on a custom cab? VIN # OC1540113009 1960 C10 LWB

Hello all,
I'M new to the group so please excuse any crazy or stupid questions.

I just purchased 1960 Chevrolet fleet side 4x4, all original big window which needs a complete frame off restoration. I wanted to see how to decode the Vin number which will give me a breakdown of everything.

I'm either looking to sell the truck as is, or I'm considering restoring it back to factory specs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

0 = 1960
K = 4x4
1 = 1/2 ton
4 = 115" wheel base
4 = Pickup
O = Oakland, CA
115317 = 15,317th produced
