Hello Bolters,

I am in the process of making my 55 first series into the "54 that I shouldn't have sold many years ago". My 54 had wide white wall tires on original rims. I found a set of used wide whites for $230(new ones are a lot of money), they were taken off a car that had been restored some time ago.

My plans for the truck are slow speed backroad cruising as everything will be stock. I am a little worried about the using tires that are old (the owner will email me the date code tomorrow so I will know how old they are)and I heard stories about bias ply tires getting a hard spot when they sit. If the tires lasted a couple of years and say 5000 miles, I would be happy with them.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Joe

I am a very big fan of bias-ply tires. I have 650-16 Firestone Deluxe Champions on my truck. These are new tires with a new rubber compound. They do not flat spot and do run very nicely. Like all bias type they can track a bit if they get in a groove on the road. I keep my truck away for 4 months during the winter and have never encountered flat spotting. I also cruise at 55 mph and they are very smooth.
I originally had an old set of bias-ply (forgot the name) and yes they did flat spot. The new compound they are using is faer superior.
