I have a 54' 3/4 ton chevy truck that I am having a hard time finding hub caps for. No one that I know of has anything for a 3/4 ton after 53'. My question is this, will a set of hub caps for a 53' fit a 54'? There can't possible that much deference in the wheels. I know they will be different in appearance but I would think the shape would be the same. Any help would be great, thanks. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | | | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 127 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 127 | Thanks, the only difference I see is that instead of just a bow tie in blue it will say Chevrolet in red.

What is the part number for the 1954 3/4 ton hub cap at Classic Parts of America?
Thanks,

I ordered them thinking that they would go on a 15" rim no matter 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton. I was wrong.

Are you sure that the 15" wheels on your '54 3600 are the original wheels? 1954 hub caps may not fit other wheels.
16" wheels were standard. 15" wheels were offered in 1954 as RPO 273 with 6-ply tires; and as RPO 280 with 8-ply tires.
Tim or Brad can give the definitive answer, but I believe that 1954 wheels would have clips riveted onto them to hold the hub caps. Later model wheels have dimples to hold the hub caps.

I do not know about 55-2nd and later - I do not know when they stopped using clips (55-2nd Task Force seems a good guess). I think that 1954 15" and 16" 1/2 ton wheels have clips and use the same hub cap (my dim memory is that I swapped these around about 15 years ago). However, the 1954 1/2 ton truck accessory stainless steel full-wheel cover only fits the 16" 1/2 ton wheel (this makes sense). 15" 3/4 ton 1954 rims should match 53 3/4 ton 15" rims. I know nothing about what hub caps will fit a 15" A-D 3/4 ton rim. It is interesting that many of the specs for 15" 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton rims seem to be the same, but it seems the hub caps do not match (reported above by nak1954): 1953 wheel information 1954 wheel information | | | | | Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2010 Posts: 1,232 | Tim -
I was pulling a suggestion out of my ###. All assumption and no knowledge.
I assumed that '54 hub caps fit all 15" and 16" '54 Chev 3100 & 3600 truck wheels. And I thought that they may not fit "non-'54 wheels".
I should have looked at the Truck Specs before I posted my assumptions.
I see in the Truck Specs links that you posted - that the diagrams for 15" wheels for 3100 and 3600 look the same. But as you pointed out - the bolt pattern is different ... 6 bolts in 5-1/2" circle for 3100 and 8 bolts in 6-1/2" circle for 3600. Which (I assume) would make the center of the wheels different where the hub cap attaches.
I just checked ebay. A seller specifically states that the hub caps that he is selling will fit a 3100 and NOT a 3600.
By the way, I didn't know until I read the specs that 15" wheels were standard (base) on 3600.

Some models/plants continued to use clip wheels for a while after the introduction of the nubs. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | When did GM change from 6 clips to 3 clips? 1955?

You hit the nail on the head for the difference between the 1/2 15" rim and the 3/4 ton 15" rim: you go from a 6 bolt pattern to a 8 bolt. So with the the bigger bolt pattern you need and bigger AND deeper hub cap.

But if you look in Jim Carters classic truck parts, the 3/4 ton caps they have for a 49' - 53' say they will fit trucks through 55'. It just would not be correct for 54'. It should fit but instead of the double bow tie, it would just say Chevrolet.
