Likely a dumb question, but...

As I don't have a 1/2 ton around to compare to... are the front hood emblems the same on a COE as on the 1/2-tons?

Also, two of my COE's have the 'regular' Chevrolet emblems on the side, the 3rd COE (48) has Loadmaster under the Chevrolet. Was it a different model or just trim variation?

Thanks and sorry for potentially dumb questions.

Cheers!

Hood side emblems differed during Advance-Design years. What years are you referring to?

I do not know about other years, but in 1954, the big truck front hood emblem was different from the smaller trucks.

The 1948 is the one with the 'Loadmaster' side emblem.

The 48 has the shorter wheelbase, the others are the longer wheelbase, not that it matters necessarily.

The 1950 and 1952 have the regular 'Chevrolet' script.

1. The COE front emblem in 1948 was different from other 1948 truck front emblems.

2. The single Thriftmaster or Loadmaster side emblem was used from 1947 through the middle of 1949. From mid-49 through 1952, two emblems were used on both sides of the hood ("CHEVROLET" over "the series number").

By the way, are you a professional brewer or a home brewer (I home brew).

Thanks, Tim! That clears it up.

I've homebrewed for 26 years, and am opening a microbrewery in 2014, the renovation of our 98-year old building is underway.

The 52 COE will be a functioning beer truck, with wood barrels on the back, for festivals, parades, and advertising. The 48 will be parked inside and the flatbed will act as a big table with barstools around it, and maybe a band platform. Cheers!

Also, Tim... my COE's don't have the numbers under the side emblems. Both are original and don't even have the holes where the numbers would be missing. My 48 has Loadmaster on both sides.

COE front hood emblems, are nothing like the conventional truck hood emblems. The COE front hood emblems are always cast metal, & conform to the shape of the front of the COE Hood. As for the side emblems, they were the same on conventional cab trucks, & Cabover Engine trucks. 1947, & '48 model trucks that had the 235ci. engine (some 1 1/2 ton, & all 2 ton)had "Loadmaster" emblems, & the smaller 1/2 ton thru 1 ton, plus the 1 1/2 ton trucks that came standard with the 216 engine had "Thriftmaster" emblems. As for the smaller series designation numbers, I've seen some '49-'52 model trucks that did have the numbers, & I've seen some that didn't. All '53, & '54 model trucks that had the larger series designation numbers, but no "Chevrolet" script, had the series emblems only.

Thanks Spanky!

I had a sneaking suspicion that the front emblem was specific to the COE's. I used to have some 1/2-ton parts around and would have compared them. I wanted to make sure before I sent one of these COE emblems off to get re-chromed. Thanks again!

If you have one, that's in good shape, that's a bonus. Being cast metal, they are usually badly pitted. I sold two NOS, a few years ago.

I'd have loved to get one of the NOS ones from you. Mine have pitting, but not too bad. The one I'm having re-chromed won't be perfect when finished, but it will be shiny and will be just fine for Brewtus, the big beer hauler.

I didn't realize you had three COE's now. Have you posted pictures of all of them ? I'd like to check them out.

And... I'm looking at two more, lol...

One is a GMC and I think I will just stick with Chevy.

I also bought a neat old 65 GMC one-ton flatbed.

Buy a GMC COE, if you can. They actually are a better truck. A little more scarce also. I didn't realize this, until I bought my first one.

The guy wants $3000 for it. A little much for what it is but he also has been sitting on it for several years, I'm thinking I could get it for about half of that with a pile of hundred dollar bills. I just figured I'd stick to Chev's so they all match and have parts interchangeability.

How are they better? I assumed it was all the same except for sheet metal?

The GMC's don't have the babbit bearing 6 cylinder engines. Plus after dis-assembling several COE's of both makes, I could see the GMC trucks were sturdier built, than the Chevrolet's. I was a Chevrolet COE guy all the way,(I've owned probably 25 Chevy COE's) until I bought my first GMC (only owned 4 GMC COE's). I wouldn't have it any other way now.
