I'm new to Stovebolt. I have a 54 Chevy 3100, 235, which has the add on filter near the carb. My question is when changing oil, the 235 takes 5 quarts, do you add 1 quart for the filter? 6 quarts for an oil and filter change.

If you have a 1 qt canister by-pass oil filter, and you change the filter-element and remove all the old oil from the canister, you would an extra quart of oil when you change oil.
5 qts for the engine
1 qt for the 1 qt filter unit
Some people put some oil in the filter canister when they change oil/filter. This results in less delay in the oil feed/pressure when starting the engine after the oil change.
