For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 47 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 47 | I currently have no emergency brakes. the left side emergency brake cable was hooked up but was not having any braking/holding effect and the right side was missing the cable altogether. I ordered a new cable from classic parts of america(cpa) but the end of the cable which attaches to the brake lever inside the drum is different from left side cable and will not attach to the emergency brake lever. the new cable has a metal bar at the end whereas the old one has a "u" shaped yoke which hooks on to the lever hook. when I called cpa the guy assured me that I must be missing a part in the drum for the cable bar to slide into. I think that is unlikely because the left cable and lever seem correct. I called inline tubing (I think it's called) and they carry cables for every year except the 1950--which makes me think the correct cable is hard to find for the 1950. i'd show a picture but i'm not sure how to post it on a separate site and share the link. does anyone know anything about the 1950 brake cable and where I can find the correct one. thanks much. 1950 1/2 ton.

Starting in 1951 Chev changed from Huck to Bendix brakes. The cable they sold you is for the 1951-54 Bendix brakes. I have used those cables on a Huck truck by slicing the little yoke enough to get it off an old cable and installing it on the new cable. Then tack weld the cut back together.

Also, when working on your parking brake cable, make sure your brake shoes are working correctly. I assume you have a stock truck with huck style brakes? There's a concentric bolt (spelling?) that holds the parking brake arm on the shoe. That's an adjustment also. For the shoes, make sure they are all moving freely on the pins. When I did my brakes, I used anti sieze on the pins. The service manual (available on line) has good instructions. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 47 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 47 | Update: i was unable to find the right cable for the 1950 huck ebrake. I was able to buy a yoke mechanism (part no. me186, i think) from carter which attaches to the newer style bendix cable (the cable which is more commonly sold). i had to grind down a little the bar at the end of the cable and the round portion of the ebrake lever (inside the drum) so that the lever would rotate without getting hung up on the cable bar. i haven't put the brakes back together so i'm not sure if i've resolved my ebrake issue but i'm a step closer. thanks.
