The resto is heading towards the finish line. It is all new and I have upgraded to an alternator. I have not put the wiring harness in as I still need to paint interior. Can the alternator be harmed by running it without being wired up to anything? Thanks in advance for any answers.

The current going through the brushes gives off a small amount of gas which acts like a lubricant. The brushes will wear out sooner but if just moved around a bit will not be noticable. A gen . is a different story. If the reg. goes bad & you keep driveing the gen. won,t last very long.

They requir some current to create the magnetic field, thats why an alternator can't recharge a completely dead battery. I would be more concerned about running the battery down than damaging the alernator. I would still avoid running it until you can hook up the wireing.
