If I were to register my '65 with YOM (original) plates in Massachusetts what plates would I have to find? I have read that in MA in the 60s plates were only printed in even years. I suppose I would have to use 1964 plates if that would work in this state. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

have you looked for info about YOM plates on the state RMV website?
I bet your local motor vehicle office could shed some light for ya wink

Bill

You might need one of these with an earlier plate.

Thanks Bill and Doug. The MA RMV website is not the most user friendly and heaven help you if you try to reach someone on the phone. I will try the site again but I was wondering if anyone could verify my belief that there was no MA plate in 1965. If that is the case I would have to go with the 1964 plate as Doug said.

In 1964 Mass switched from issuing plates in odd years to even years. This was due to poor paint that was used on the 1963 paints that cracked and peeled. (Some stories attribute this to prisoners urinating into the paint, while others chalk it up to corrupt bidding on paint. Like the 28/29 fish story, this one has also seemed to take on a life of its own!) Consequently, nice looking 1963 plates are hard to find. Again in 1965 no dated plate was issued, but those issued to new registrants in 1965 had a W prefix.

Thank you for all the great links Tim. I guess I would have to try to find plates with the "W" prefix. I had YOM plates on my '66 Mustang and they looked great.

I have a 1960 YOM plate for Louisiana. It is LSU's centennial and in Yellow and Purple. I'd love to use it, but the colors takes getting used to.

we use to have the same problem here in B.C. back in the day when they were made at Oakalla Prison in Burnaby. it did change once they were made elsewhere.

I have YOM plates in NY for my '61. NY issued new plates in '60, then issued a small, yellow 61 cover for the lower right corner of the plate. This is how mine is set up to legal in NY. I also managed to find a repro New York plate topper, which finishes off the look quite nicely! Best of luck in getting yours just the way you want it.

Greenman.
