Hello All.

I'm not new to forums but new to this one. I'm however, new to restoring...well...somewhat. I helped my pap restore a 35 ford sedan years ago but I was young.

Anywho, my dad just bought a 51' Chevy pickup. Plans are complete restoration, all original.

Just thought I'd join in here cause I'm sure I'll have many, many questions. One was already answered this morning through browsing this site....Why the heck would chevy design the bellousing so that ya had to take the clutch and flywheel out first??!!! What a pain :)

Chat later.

Welcome to the Stovebolt,stove51. You are definitely at the right place.... the best place for us old Chevy iron lovers. They made a lot of the AD design pickups so finding stuff for these years is not hard to do.
Congrats on keeping it stock but regardless of what you and your dad do we are here to help. Just post questions in the best forum and you will get results. Good luck and when you can how about a pic or two.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

Flywheel/ clutch housing not so stupid a design. Especially when the rear motor mounts are integral with it. They didn't expect you to pull the housing to get to those items. And the way the rear of the block was designed that is the best way to attach it to the block. At the time they didn't think of the flange webs that the V8's and newer 6's have. I think its easier to get a clutch out of a 235 than a small block V8 in the truck, so it isn't all that bad an idea.
And I really like that "all original deal" please keep us all up todate on its progress.

Thanks guys. I've been trying to get pics linked up but photobucket has been acting up lately. I think I need to update my browser. I do have some good pics of our progress so far, and would like to share them.

Heading over to dads this afternoon to start removing clutch and flywheel and cleaning up the valves. I'll keep ya'll updated.

Big thanks on the "all original" aspect. We take a little pride in that. But as far as the bell housing, i disagree...But thats a whole other topic smile But none the less...pressure plate and flywheel is out as well as bell housing. Not without effort though. Clutch and pressure plate was removed easily but those darn shallow flywheel bolts were a [censored].

After the impact wrench wouldn't even budge them we had to take a torch to them and finally they came right out.

Today's efforts consisted of cleaning valves and head as well as clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. All went well and head looks real good. Valve #1 (we believe) was replaced at some point and needs some attention. But all in all, things look good. Pressure plate and clutch need replaced and flywheel needs some attention but nothing that can't be fixed.

Next project...open up the block and see how the bearings and seals look. I'll keep y'all updated.

Later folks wink
