I have a 216 engine (don't know what its from) that has some unusual marking on the side of the block. Casted on the side is the number 48 in the center of a circle. The casting is lifted and is about he size of a half dollar? Has anyone seen one of these before and if so what is it?

I own several pre-war 216's but the "48" marking is very unique and interesting.

Both 1948 and 1949 has the raised 48 in a 2" circle.
You would need to look at the casting date behind the starter to see exactly the month, day, and year.

Any major improvements/differences in this engine from earlier models?

There were a few starting in 48.
Rods got narrower and used thinner Babbitt.
Mains went to precision inserts.
Block water drain went from 1/8" to 1/4" pipe thread.
There are more but that is off the top of my head.

any chance it could be a 235?

You would need to check the code stamped next to the distributor or measure the height of the block. 235's are 1/8" taller than 216's.

Dave, Would that 1/8 inch difference between 235 and 216 be from the "Pan ledge to top of block ?
Do you know by chance what the 216 measurement is or the 235 measurement is?

216 is 10 3/4" from pan ledge to deck of block.
235 is 10 7/8".
