with headlights on if i hit a turn signal i get no brake lights. using dual filament single lights for tail, turn and brake lights. everything else works fine. any ideas on this one? will single dual filaments work for all three lights????

Probably a bad turn switch. The brake lights go through the turn switch so it flashes the corresponding light.

but with the headlights off everything works fine. brake and turn signals at the same time. problem only occurs if the headlights/taillights are on

It sounds like you have a bad ground for the rear lights.Try to supply an extra/known good ground and recheck.

Agree. Take a test wire & start at the socket to chassis.

well i think you may have been right first time wrenchbender. now i get no brakes at all. I know wiring from the firewall back is good so i started shecking under the dash. i loose power to the brakes at the steering column. so i guess turn signal switch??? power goes in from brake switch but dosent come back out. now just have to figure how to get in there... think the column is the original???

If it has the turn switch under the steering wheel I used to go in with a pair of needle nose pliers & bend the contact springs to make contact.

can i just spice in the wire from the brake switch into the turn signals behind the turn signal switch? will this cause any problems? Hope to get a new steering coulmn and rewire before too long so I would rather not fix old stuff that is on the list for replacement.

You can't really bypass the stop light switch feed into the ts switch. the ts switch allows the brake switch as a single input and gives out 2 signals to the brake lights, when needed it will interrupt the brake light signal and allow it to be a turn signal to one side and a brake light to the other side. This may sound confusing, but this is how it works!
