I have a 52 Chevy 3100 truck that I want to convert from 6V to 12V. The problem is I'm an electrical rookie, so have several questions. I know I need a voltage reducer to keep the gauges & heater motor on 6V. Are there any additional components that need to be kept on 6V? Do I need a 12V regulator? Will the existing starter & coil work on 12V? Whats the ups/downs of converting the generator to 12V vrs changing to an alternator? Thanks for any help. Bob

Hi Bob,

I'm sure the first question is why do you want to convert to 12V? Is it just to power a few components? If so, you can get a 6V to 12V converter.

IF you are set on 12V, you can get a one wire alternator that has the regulator built in, therefore eliminating your regulator. OR you can get a 12V generator and use a regulator... Lots of choices.
