Just put in a 48 216 splasher in my 49 chevy. while cleaning up the external oil filter I have noticed that the oil lines will need to be replaced but do not know which ones go where. Does the port on the side of the filter go to the fitting that has the oil pressure gauge on it or does it go to the fitting to the left. Also while I am spending time ordering the parts I need can I (bypass) or. plug up the two openings on the side of the engine or do I need to pull a jumper tube from one opening to the other, don't want to run engine if these two openings need to be connected

The oil filters used on these engines are only partial flow filters (only part of the oil goes trhrough the filter) and were actually an option for the engine. Unless you have converted your engine to full flow oiling as in the tech articles. The holes in the block can be plugged. Least that is my understanding.
I'd have to look up how the lines go to the connection on the block.

Okay the book I have shows the linbe coming off the side of the filter going to the front hole on the engine block (main oil gallery) and the one off the bottom of the filter going to the rear hole on the block (which just drains back into the oil pan)

The line connecting to the port in the side of the canister connects to the oil pressure gauge fitting. That's the "high pressure" or feed line. The line leaving the bottom of the canister connects to your forward position "to the left" as you put it.

The filter on my '38.

Connection schematic.

The main differences in the different years is the mounting point of the canister. Tim, when did Chevy move the vacuum port to the "Box" necessitating the move of the canister to the front intake rail? Since the 40-47 schematic shows it on the front rail I'm assuming it was in '40?

Tiny,

I learned about that vacuum port only a week or so ago. I'd guess 1940, because that manifold was used until 1949 (into Advance-Design trucks, my limited knowledge period).

It makes sense that would have affected the location of the oil filter.

Come to think of it the schematic I posted is for 41-42 and it shows the canister mounted to the box which wouldn't be possible if the vacuum port was there. It's not important, I'm just curious.

Is there a difference between the late model 235 engine hookup and the 216 engine? In the motors manual I have it shows the routing of the oil thru the engine and they show the rear hole in the block (closest to the firewall) as draining back to the oil pan and the hole forward of it coming off the main oil gallery.

This is the instruction sheet for the mid 50s. That would cover the 235. The canister is different but the connections are the same. You can figure wherever the oil pressure gauge is connected by the factory will be the high pressure side.

i don't mean to hijack the thread, but what year canister would have been yellow with a silver lid? i only ask out of curiosity as the one that i bought for $5 was this color. or were these canisters painted to match the engine it was installed on?

Indy,

Did you read the information and look at photos at the Oil Filter Tech Tip link that is in a post above? Is your filter not shown there?

An oil filter on a 216 is about as good as tits on a board.
If you check oil pressure at the front and rear ports you will see they are about the same except at an idle. The front port goes right into the dipper supply tubes galley so there is close to the same pressure at each spot.
