I have a '53 3100 panel truck; I want to replace the springs on the upper hinges which keep the driver/passenger doors open. Is there a trick to removing the hinge pin? I can move the pin about 1/4", there is no rust, they are not bound, I do not see any set screw.

thanks Larry

If I understand what your asking, take the hinge out and replace the pin and put in the horseshoe shaped door checks.

Sometimes they fall out. and sometimes you have to drill them out.

Heat, punch, BFH, no cussing (it doesn't really help), and don't burn your hand.

HEAT....YES. I've built a few of them and just got plain sick and tired of trying to knock them out. I have no torch so I just take the hinge to a friend of mine and he heats it till its Cherry Red and then WHACK. A couple licks with the punch and hammer and they're out. Its well worth the time to use the HEAT.
Plus, it makes redrilling the holes for the new pins a lot neater and straighter.

No one has mentioned it and maybe I misunderstood but are you trying to do it without taking the hinge out??? IF so, don't try to kid yourself. Take the hinge out and then have at it.

I did take the hinge out and put it in my vise; although I am sure that there are people out there who would try to do it on the truck.

I did try heat, but I only have a propane torch, certainly didn't turn it red hot.

.... I tried it with a small propane torch and mapp gas but it just wasn't enough. Ruined one hinge and that's when I said "no more". I will either get tanks for my new "big torch" kit or have someone heat them up for me. Got to be rosy/cherry red.
