I have a 46 GMC COE that I have been working on for a few years. The truck has been bare metal for a couple years, it has been parked inside so the bare metal hasn't been an issue. I have some river property and want to take the truck up there and leave it outside for the summer. I was thinking I will get a couple quarts of rustoleum primer and cover her up with it for the summer. Is this going to be a problem when I start my real paint job this fall. I don't want to strip the primer off when I start my paint.

Real paint jobs don't go on over rustoleum... so you'll have to strip it.
Which makes the price of Epoxy Primer worth every penny...
You can let it sit for the summer or 5 years at the river. Come back when your ready, block it down and continue on.

And if your going to that trouble, to mask it etc. just complete the job and paint it. And since its bare metal use good stuff. Rustoleum is for quicky cheap, it will not be a cheap or fun thing to strip it off for a good paint.

If the truck will be outside, you need the primer to actually seal out the elements. Many primers are porous and do not seal out moisture. The rustoleum would likely be ok if you were topcoating in that paint session so the finish would be sealed. As you described, spraying rustoleum primer only is going to mean stripping and re-priming down the road if your truck is sitting outdoors. The epoxy is your only choice in this case, IMO.

It looks like someone added up what a gal of primer, high build, and sealer would run and charged the price for a gallon of each...

figuring the customers would be so dazzled by how easy the one step paint 'is going to be' they miss the fact they are still shy 2 gallons.

I pay about $86 a gal... It won't whistle dixie but it is made there!

When it comes time to do the body work can I apply the filler over the epoxy primer?

Check the instructions for the filler.

Yes is the answer.
If your going to use epoxy I strongly advise you to educate yourself about it. The prep can be strict. Not difficult, just real important you do it correctly and right up front....
NO SODA blasting. Chemical stripping must be correctly neutralized.

that said I love the versatility of it... I use it for metal protection under filler, scratch with 80 grit and apply filler (next day or next year), over filler to lock it in and then as my 'high build', then I use it as a sealer coat.... wait a minute.... No where on the can do I find all those claims to fame??? Must be why I have to apply myself.

I think the all u need is actually 135 a gallon. It's 450 for a case of 4 gallons at clausens and you can buy it by the gallon at tptools for 130 something. I was just curious if anyone has had any experience with it. I haven't seen any complaints from the few people that have used it. Someone has suggested I use it and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on it.

It say's right on the front of the can it's "Polyester Primer", and polyester filler or primer is a moisture absorbent not a moisture protection which is the root of the epoxy or filler against the metal debate... And still half again as much as a gal of EP...

Well if you read it says it moisture resistant and can be applied to bare metal and doesn't have to be sealed. You see I actually read whats on the description too and not just the front of the can.
