For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 144 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 144 | awhile back I bought 3 apaches and a '53 GMC (still stock) in one fell swoop (they were going to be crushed). Since then I bought a '48 ford (same reason). so I have wads of old trucks with engines that may or may not run, some missing ignition switches (and wiring), some missing keys, etc. I really want to just see if they run (yes, have soaked cylinders for weeks now and turned over w/breaker bar on flywheel and cleaned plugs, rebuilt carbs, etc). Is there some simple way an idiot like me can crank and run them without ignition switches? I realize someone might prefer to PM me and not throw this out there, appreciate whatever you can offer. The things I'd like to crank for now is my positive ground 6 volt 53 GMC and my 12 volt 58 apache (has ignition switch intact, no key), and my '48 ford f3 (all there but no key). Surely there is some way I can use jumpers between battery and coil and what else?? thank you lefty | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | don't know about Fords, but with the foot starter all that's needed is the jumper from battery + to coil + and stomp the pedal - see a wiring diagramBill | | | | | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 144 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 144 | If it fails to crank then, do I need to pull starter and try to clean it out? I already tried on one '58 apache and none of that did anything (well, I did get to see the fuel gauge work and headlight/taillight), but no cranking. My buddy said it probably sat and was "open" field and I should tap hard on the case with a small hammer? Or, should I remove it and somehow clean it out? Never disassembled a starter before, never worked on a footstomp one either. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | well, if the starter is hooked up and it doesn't function it's probably a starter problem, a rap with something may wake it up, or it may need pulling and bench testing, could be a number of problems, but they're pretty simple and there's info in the manualsBill | | |
