| | | | Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 51 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2012 Posts: 51 | Just got my rebuilt 235 back in and running after the usual can of worms - old fuel pump broke the lever, fished the piece out of the pan - fuel line broke changing out the fuel pump - replaced it from the tank to the pump, started up and runs strong! But there is a obvious noise that I thought might be the water pump. Runs cool and the noise is noticeably louder at 55 mph. Now here the puzzler...it gets louder when I stop and put on the parking brake! Any thoughts on this? That would help. Best way to eliminate the possibility of the water pump, generator, etc.. is to remove the fan belt and try it.

I don't think it's the pump, it's only three years old with about a 100 miles on it. I was thinking about loosening up the motor mount bolts, starting it up, move it forward and back and retighten. It's the parking brake part that's puzzling! | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | The parking brake linkage pulls the engine and transmission towards the rear when engaged.
It is possible that the harmonic balancer is hitting on the front mount.

The metal grease shield that rides on top of the front motor mount was touching the harmonic balancer. You can see daylight thru the metal shield where it was rubbing! The 216 that I replaced in '92 didn't have that piece and neither did the '55 235 that went back in. Trying to do everything right this time we installed it like original but I guess the '61 235 didn't like it there! Gone now and although I haven't run it yet I'm pretty sure that was the cause of my 'curious noise'. That is because any oil that runs down on top will go through the bolt holes and get to the rubber. I got rid of mine too as it made putting the pan on a horrible task.

Took her for a long drive today and it was really quiet till about 50mph and then a slight vibration kicked in. Nothing serious but noticible. I'll get to put a timing light on the new engine on Friday and will see how close the timing is. Might be the cause of the roughness. The new HEI dist. and Fenton headers should be a real plus to the old girl. Thanks to Dave and all you guys for the help and compliments.
