I have a 51 chev pickup, and I'm changing the motor from a 216 to 235ci. its out of a 55 chev with auto trans. So it has solid lifters and full oil pressure. I took the motor apart to clean everything and check bearings. and so on. I took the oil pump apart to check gears and misplaced the gasket! I read where you need to get a gasket from Chevrolet. nothing else will work.(true or false)so where do you get a gasket for a 1955 235ci from Chevrolet mafg.

Most likely, some one else will post info on the oil pump gasket. If not, get gasket material and make a gasket.

Did you engine come from a car (Powerglide transmission - that engine would have had hydraulic lifters) or did is come from a truck (Hydra-Matic transmission - that engine would have had mechanical/solid lifters)?

To confidently identify the engine (it may be a replacement engine), post the engine serial number: it is pressed into the block, just to the rear of where the distributor goes into the block.

that would be false, it is just a gasket, there is no magic involved. You would have to get one the proper thickness, (what that would be I have no idea) But I'm thinking what ever will give the proper clearance should be what you will need. There may be some NOS gaskets out there, however it will probably be pretty dried up by now, probably could soak it in some diesel or something to soften it up. But I am pretty sure chevy stopped making those many years ago. You could try jim carter, chevs of the 40's, egge to start with. there are others, but between these three and the place down the street I haven't had to go anywhere else.

I think I remember seeing them in an engine gasket set but not all sets come with them. They are quite thin.

Maybe someone who rebuilt a 54 or later 235 engine and used a new oil pump would have a spare oil pump gasket? The Fel-Pro set includes:
