I have been fighting with my wipers and can't get it right. I found that on the first try I had the linkage on the wrong posts, Then I found that one of the posts was frozen and wouldn't swivel, Now I've got everything working fine, But I can't keep the spring retainer to stay on. Does anyone have any tips on how to go about putting them on? Thank you, Terry

I was having the same problem with the retainer not staying on so I used c-clips to hold the linkage in place.

Hugh Spitler has a good Restoration Article in the Tech Tips Section under Windows called "Windshield Wipers (Slow Them Down)".

Like Slick69, Mr Spitler addresses the problem of keeping the arms on the spindles with the use of C-clips.

It's been a while since I removed/replaced the wiper linkage but if I remember right there are grooves in the part that the clips fit into. Make sure your clips are in those grooves and you should solve the problem.

I never thought this would be an issue so I never considered anything but the stock clip. Wouldn't those C (some call them E) clips be a bit difficult to remove if you ever needed to once the wiper motor is in place?

If the arms are aligned properly (as in perpendicular to shaft axis) and are not worn, the original spring clips will work. These are available new. ($2.50) Don't know if they are being popped off by misalignment or not in groove to begin with or spring is shot? But wrong arm on wrong place and frozen shaft points to misalignment/assembly problem. Those guys will stay on for a 100 years. Be sure that motor (I guess vacuum in your case) is mounted correctly and not crooked or missing a grommet/spacer.

They are called E clips at the hardware store bin. And I imagine it would be hard to keep one that small from flying on removal. Best buy several and keep some on the shelf if you go this route.

As you guys suggested I bought E clips and put them on my wiper motor The wipers work great and the linkage stays on. Thank you very much. I love the Bolt!!!

The wiper motor is mounted with 2 screws, you might want to loosen the screws and adjust the motor so the arms square up.
