UhhhG!

So I bought two gallons of Dupont Ful Thane I was able to paint everything with the first gallon(see photos below) except the bed/tailgate.

SO I cracked open the second gallon and it was not blue but Green - took it back and they mixed another - that looks about right.

Started the bed yesterday and did a test panel - seemed close but a slightly lighter blue. I painted anyway. and yes now I have two friggin colors.

Is it that hard to mix two gallons the same color?
Could the color change in the can if it sits for 2 weeks prior? (the first gallon I waited 2 weeks before paint)it is metallic (bad choice for first timer)the stuff aint cheap -

Yes it's that hard to mix two gallons the "exact" same tint.
That's why it good practice if you're going to use paint from
two different mixes to blend them together before applying them.
This becomes a real nightmare when you're spraying metallics or
pearlescent paint.

well this is awful!

looks like I will need to sand it al down again and repaint. It was my last two panels I ran out on.

Need to rethink this whole paint process. Never really wanted metallic - what a way to waste a lot of hours of work.

May just put the truck aside for 4 weeks and take up drinking for awhile.

Do you have a pic that shows the contrast in colors.

It will not show up well in a picture. Wife say I am being too picky. I told her yes I am picky that is why I chose her. Plus it is a men and truck thing, she would not understand.

It is just a tad off and I am thinking that if I can let some metallic settle in the can it would make it less silvery.

I am going to give it a go later in the week and reshoot the bed. If it looks bad. I am going to sand it all down again and paint it all non metallic, Washington blue.

I’m sure you dint score a goal in you first few games of Lacrosse, or learn to recognize a
tree’s genus level the first few times out in the field, nor did you have a thorough grasp of
botany after reading Leonhard Fuchs Herbal Book.
So it is with automotive painting that many body shops have one guy that is their painter,
one that has sharpened his painting skills to the point of not having to do the job a second
time.
Chalk it up as a learning experience and learn from your mistakes or should I say,
miscalculation. It’s bound to be better the next time around.

with metalic if you did not have the same presure at the gun both times you sprayed it will be a different shade. more air =darker less air= lighter

Lesson 1: ALWAYS buy more paint than you 'think' you'll need and mix them as Denny noted.

Lesson 2: As one who has custom mixed paint it's very easy to get a color just a tad off when some of the tints in the recipe can be one or two drops and it's common for an extra drop to fall. That's why you refer to lesson 1. Even factory mix paint has batches that you need to check when buying. If you buy two or more containers of the same color but different batches you will often get differing hues. Refer to lesson 1.

Lesson 3: If spraying metallic paint the color can be changed by using different air pressure as Leonard noted AND it can also be changed by the amount of thinner used so always spray all panels at the same time using the same mix, gun and pressure.

I will try a bit more pressure. I did change my gauge and filter right before this. I hope that works. Would love to be in the July 4th caravan

And I imagine less reducer means a bit darker also

Oh my, that seemed to get me as close as I needed. Looks good, you guys are unbelievable!

I moved the pressure up and it seems better.

I will wear my stovebolt tshirt to church in the am!

I'm always surprised of how much help this great forum is. Way to go....

....and I'm no painter but I AM impressed. Heck, I may give it a try with my 25 dollar gun.

So this on google books says that higher pressure lightens - but I did lay down more paint with less of a fan and instead of 8-1-2 (2 being reducer) I went with 8-1-1. So it may have not been the pressure but the volumn and less reducer allowing the flake to go deeper making it less silvery.
