about 4 years ago i converted my 1954 chevy pu to 12v w/a one wire alternator which is now connected to the batt post on the regulator. everything works fine but i have been told i can remove my voltage regulator completely. there are two red wires on the batt post now not counting my alt.wire and one small blue wire on the last post on the right (can't remember what it says). i assume i can simply connect all the red wires together but what about the blue one? will my amp gauge etc still work?

djed50,

I was searching for some input on your question...guess what I found. You posted a similar question back in Feb of '05...as they say in Texas, do sumpin, even if it's wrong!

I am not sure on this, but the only wire you need is the red 10 gauge wire on the B post of the regulator. This should go to the + side of the ammeter.

Which red wire...I don't know. The power side of the ammeter handles the entire load so it is at least a #10 wire..is the other wire a smaller gauge! I think the blue wire went to the field on the generator..it isn't used so tape it up.

If you can't decipher the two reds, connect them both, but make a good tight connection. This is the main artery for the trucks blood supply.

Do all this and see how the systems works. If it starts smoking, I plead ignorance.

It is best to use a terminal block, like this . This is what the batt terminal of your regulator is being used as now, a connection point for all the hot wires. Connect all 3 wires to a terminal block and dead-end the blue wire. Put the regulator up on a shelf. Someone will need it some day.

djed50,

I think the other red wire on that terminal of the regulator went to the horn relay. If I am reading the schematic properly, that's what it looks like to me.

atomarc - you are correct - i did do a post and actually printed off the replys - of course i can't find them now. i believe i was told to run the red wire from the alternator to the positive side of the amp gauge at that time. my concern was with the other three wires. (two reds and a blue) apparently i can ditch the little blue wire and connect all the three red ones together. the terminal block is a good idea cletis - thanks. this being 175 miles from my truck and only getting to work on it every so often is the poops!!!!! i need to use the search button first in the future.
