I sprayed it on rather than rolling like I've seen in the past. I saw someone on YouTube who'd sprayed it and thought I'd give it a try. But I did have issues, not with the paint itself, but with the cheap@$#% Harbor Freight gun. I never could get the paint flow quite right. Halfway through the first side, the *%$#)% fell apart! Literally!! The flow set screw came flying of the back of the gun! I had no Idea where the darned thing went so I made a mad dash back to the store to get a new one. I thought that I'd just buy the the cheaper $15 gun and just get the set screw rather than buying another $40 one because they looked just alike..... NOT!! Got home and they were totally different! Didn't want to drive back to the store so I figured I may as well try it. It was also at this point that I realized that I'd also forgot to use the water filter I'd bought the first time. Man what a lethal combination!!! The gun leaked paint like a sieve and the filter leaked water and ruined my hard work. The paint it self looked AWESOME, if you didn't look at the obvious air bubbles and the globs of dripped paint!!! (which also ruined the garage floor!!) Sanded down the bad spots and went to Home Depot and found a much better gun. shot it again with the new gun and it turned out great. No issues this time.... almost. Right at the start the threads on the plastic water filter stripped and it blew off showering the paint with Teflon tape fragments!! A quick trip to the local auto parts store solved that. They had a metal one that was perfect. The Home Depot gun worked flawlessly right out the box!!!

As far as the paint goes, I used a gallon Rustoleum Professional series gloss black thinned with 2 pints of acetone. I applied about three coats all together. There are a couple of runs I need to deal with, but overall I'm a happy camper!!

I've never tried thinning it with acetone before. I always use their thinner or most of the time mineral spirits for thinning.....
Seems like anytime you get a paint gun out there can be trials.....I was spraying Rustoleum Sunrise Red on a project one time, that color must attract knats, I must have had hundreds stuck in the first coat. Was no use trying to go on, I wiped it down and waited till another day. Usually I carry a roll of masking tape in my pocket, if I get a knat or bug, I make a tape ball and gently lift out the offender..... John

I had thinner in my shopping cart, then I read the instructions on the paint can & it said to use acetone.

What model gun did you end up using from Home Depot?

I don't think I've ever used the Professional series paint before in the gallons. I've always just used the regular quarts available at the store.....

Looks good in the photos. Let it dry for a week or more and then shoot with automotive (catalyzed) clear. Otherwise, the paint wont last very long.

I can't remember the exact year, but I believe they're from a '00 or so Silverado.

Looks great Robert! Are you concerned about the durability? Will it be as hard as a two part paint with hardener? I am thinking of painting my truck with a two part (well three with paint, hardener, reducer.) I am going to use a small gun that my air compressor handles. It is only for touch up, but I am thinking if I do a panel at a time I will be OK.

It's not as hard as regular paint, but I haven't shot any clearcoat on it yet.

I don't know if a touchup gun will throw enough paint over a big enough spray pattern to give good coverage or not? usually they don't throw out enough paint for a large panel job, and with a narrow pattern you might more likely see "striping" in the passes.
I guess try it on one panel and see what results it gives you.

You may be right John. I can practice on my hood. I may be able to use a bigger gun now that I have a better compressor. But it is still less CFM than recommended.

Robert, if you are going to clear-coat it it should be no problem. At our paint supplier they told me the first coat is not UV resistance and not durable. The second coat should button it up nicely!
