I need to remove the distributer for two reasons. One to paint the block, and the second to use the oil priming tool I bought. It seams i need to have cylindar 1 at TDC before I remove the distributer. Not sure if it is currently timed correctly. First time I will have removed it. Any guidence would be greatly appreciated.

Get it as close as you can for TDC. Mark where it is on the cap, down the rotor, and on the block. Line these marks up when you reinstall to prevent having it 180 degrees backwards. It makes starting your truck impossible. Don't ask how I know... wink

So I finally got around to removing the distributor. I had to replace the vacuum advance. I turn the motor over without the distributor in it for some reason. Dumb I know.

How do i get my distributor back installed and timed correctly?

Get yourself a 3/8" male to 1/4" hose barbed fitting like you use for air hose and slip a short piece of hose with a hose clamp on the fitting end and on the other end of the hose slip a Trojan (or balloon) over it and cinch it tight.
Plug it into the #1 spark plug hole (surprise it screws right in!)
Turn motor over by hand and wait for it to grow big.... when it starts to get smaller you went to far.
Or you can use a piece of wire and 'feel' for it...

just watch the rocker arms, and look out for the timing ball to show up. I doesn't matter which hole you use for #1 as long as the rotor is pointing at the terminal you are going to use, then install the wires clockwise in the correct order.

When the rocker arms on cylinder number 6 are both moving and simultaneously opening / closing... #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke.

Thanks Fred. I farmed out final paint (wipe/spray) and torque tube R&R but did the rest myself with the help of the fine folks here.

Hey guys

I'm still working on this. The spark plug I have is a R 43 which has 14mm thread size. I tried the 3/8 thread as suggested but that is too big. Trying to get her on the compression stroke.
