In the diagram from the chevy duty harness directions they show 2 ways to wire the switch I still have the 6volt system with the floor starter. any help thanks doug

This might to obvious, or wrong, but I would think at least one wire goes TO the coil. If you have the 6 volt system you probably still have a generator. I am not sure on this either, but there might be a switched wire TO the voltage regulator. The supply side of the switch should come FROM the battery, meaning it comes through the ammeter.
Hopefully, before you burn your new system up, the resident electrical engineers will make a appearance and give us the straight poop. Did Chevy Duty not supply a comprehensive wiring diagram for your rig?

I wonder if these switches have a accessory position, that would make a difference wouldn't it?

What would the second switched position be for? Is the switch turned in the same direction for the first switched position and the second switched position?

It is a three position switch Turned one way it is on to both terminals and the key cannot be removed. Center is off. Turned the other way is on to both terminals but the key can be removed.

The coil wire would overheat and smoke only under a terrific load..almost a dead short. The ammeter might have been trying to tell you this! Sit down with a cup of coffee and study the wiring diagram, you might find something you overlooked. Stuart
