I painted my frame with RO. The paint is not as hard as the urethanes.

Has anyone downloaded that? Every time I see "FREE" stuff I'm
very leary. 99.9% of the time it's just bait to get you to
their site then after an hours worth of sales pitch they hit
you with the $39.95 cost for the complete detailed instructions.
It gives you the idea that it's sponsored by Rustoleum, I'll bet
it's not.

Rustoleum doesn't hold up as well as automotive paint. I've
painted trailers, and lawn tractors with it and after a few
years it's all chalked up and dull. Also GW is right about the
hardness, the binders in Rustoleum arent as good as in the auto
paint.

Thanks for the intel on this.
I won't bother now looking for some 7272 to check color correctness.

You are probably correct there Denny, not much given away for free anymore. Usually just enough info to try and get you to part with some money for the full information. Going to take me a while to download this with dial up anyway....

Rust-Oleum, 7272, which color is that??? Most of what I use is the Satin Black for things. They claim it is pretty close in color to the black GM used on things such as air cleaners ect....

It is supposedly a close interior color for 53 trucks

Only 37 dollars to find out the information.... From what I read it sounds like to give the paint more lastability, he is clearcoating the finish. Something I had thought about myself before.

I completely agree with the above statement. Consequently, I avoid using Rustoleum where the paint is constantly exposed to sunlight. But, I use Rustoleum for underhood parts, frame, inner fenders, etc. Basically, anywhere the sun doesn't shine. It will perform very well. I also used Rustoleum for the steering wheel, and mast jacket, but I cleared the paint for hopefully improved durability. The clear did not lift the Rustoleum, but I allowed the paint to cure for a least a week or more before applying the catalyzed automotive clear.

I second the rustoleum. Mines holding up well after a year or so.

DADS50, Looks good to me. I use Rustoleum for a lot of paint projects. About the only thing I don't care for is the Rustolem rusty metal primer in the spray cans. Handy stuff for quick top coating, but not very rust resistant. If it is outdoor, I like to use the Rustoleum primer in the quarts and spray it with a gun, it still seems to be enamel. Sometimes if I have rusty metal I'll mix in a little Penatrol with it.....
I take this is the color you use for cab interiors?? is it a satin color?

Thanks,

I would call it a satin, there is no gloss to it. I don't think I would want a shiny dash. I did not clear it and it held up so far for two years.

Your right there, you'd not want gloss paint anyway. you don't get any "rub" off of the paint do you? I know the silver is bad about that, even when dry, it rubs off on your fingers ect... over time.
How many spraycans does it take for a regular AD cab??

Have not experienced any rub off, I don't put any wax on it, just clean it with Windex and rag.

I don't remember how may cans it took. 6 to 8 cans should cover it. I purchased a case from Grainger and had some left over. I was covering a blue.

The rattle cans are more expensive now than they were three years ago. If you have the means and ability it may be cheaper to spray using the interior colors offered by the vendors.

If you don't have a spray system then maybe the rattle cans may be an option.

John: As I mentioned in my previous post, I used catalyzed automotive clear coat. Using Rustoleaum clear would not help the durability of the color coat in my opinion as both would be air cured enamel.

Also, I only used the Rustoleum on the steering wheel and mast jacket as I could not find a color code in order to purchase single stage automotive paint. Nor did I want to spend $65 when I only need such a small of amount of paint. The Rustoleum equivalent of the original color for the mast jacket was close enough for me and very few would ever know the difference.

Here is a poor photo of the restored mast jacket using Rustoleum and automotive clear coat.

DADS50 did you use Rustoleum primer before spraying your interior with the 7272?

I like the look of that, I'm going to try it. Thanks for putting pictures up of your finished product!

I did use a primer I just don't recall what brand
...pic...

I put the brown on some of areas that didn't need it due to being covered by floor Matt or firewall cover.

Thanks

Hey guys,

I wanted to chime in and let you guys know I've found an alternative to Rustoleum #7272. It's a Rustoleum product that is the EXACT same color (I've checked) and it's a completely different number. Here it is on their website:

http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=32&sid=7713830

When I went to Home Depot this weekend I was searching for more 7272 and they just don't have it. I found this 7713 and bought 6 cans and did the interior on my truck and it matches the doors I did with 7272 perfectly. Amazon keeps running out of the 7272, probably because so many guy on there are ordering it! lol.

Anyways, this 7713 seems to be a good replacement, AND Home Depot has it in stock!. I used their "Professional" series primer underneath it and everything seems to be good. I've scratched up a couple of places on the paint during reassembly and just spray over them and it melds together nicely.

I hope this helps the guys that are going this route, I've found it an easy process that dries quickly. No it's not perfectly smooth like a 'gun' would give you, but I like the flexibility of the 'rattle can'.

Here's what I've got so far:

Hey David,

I'm pretty sure I ordered them from this outfit:
http://www.classicpartsusa.com/category/1950_Truck_Parts_Dash_Parts

Yes, I'm very happy with the quality. I got the stuff I ordered from them reasonably quick, but I do remember having some communication problems with them regarding a backorder of some other items. Overall I think the site is ok, but there's other places online that 'feel' more organized. Their prices are pretty good though.

Sears had the 7272 April, 2013. I had to order it but they delivered to the door.

I have not heard of this vender. I would have to compare their prices with the other guys who have been around awhile first. If the difference was minimal, I would probably stay with the tried and true. Just my opinion. Steve

I've been following this thread and decided to chime in. Painted a 65 f^^d for a customer last year with Valspar equipment paint in MF gray. he was looking for a "inexpensive " job and wanted it to look military-ish. well after a year of use and sitting outside in Wisconsin it looks like the day I painted it, with some rust bubbles notwithstanding.(the prep consisted of 2 pads of 60 grit on a DA sander). also painted 3 50's era Harleys in the same paint to match the truck. he used the combo to sell the harleys'. sold all three and have more to do this summer.
long story short - I would not recommend equipment paint unless you know the results you are looking for. especially on a frame off. a quick paint over, maybe. btw I used it though a HVLP gun with thinner and a hardener. 2coats over equip primer.
there-my 2 cents
