The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Cab to Running Board Seals

I have a 49 Chevy P/U and have taken off the metal strip that holds the rubber seal for the running board. I have the new rubber seals and sanded and painted the metal strips. My question is how the strip and seal are installed. Does anyone have a picture of how this is mounted to the cab?

Exactly as DADS50 pics. The screws inter holes on the bottom of the side sill of the cab, go through the rubber seal, than screw into the metal retainer. Shown in Sect 1, Sheet 3.10 in Factory Assembly Manual.

I used #10-12 x 3/4" Square Pan Head Sheet Metal Screw Type A, 18-8 Stainless Steel to attach the seal.

The square drive screws are much easier to use than Phillips and they kinda look like the rusty clutch head screws that I removed. Stainless should eliminate future rust.

I bought new metal retainers from Chevs of the 40s rather than sandblast, epoxy prime, etc. my original retainers. I shot an extra coat of paint onto them before I installed them. They fit fine.

Thanks the picture helps. I thought the retainer went on the bottom side of the cab. The retainer is what the screws screw in to which makes sense now that I have seen it. Thanks so much for your help

My 50 uses clutch head screws

The new seals are not marked, but the screws easily punch through. I installed mine before reinstalling the running boards

You are right I have the left running board off so it makes it a lot easier to install. I think I will take the Right running board off then install the seal. I think I am going to put new running boards on because the ones on are not in the best of shape.

I was trying to get the screws you mentioned. I went to the Fastenal web but none of the local places do not have them at their places. If I ordered the amount I need it cost more for shipping than the cost of the screws. How did you get the screws from Fastenal??

Do you have an Ace Hardware store nearby?? I had to replace a lot of metal so I drilled holes and used a 1/4" with a flat and lock washer and nut.

I look up the items and item numbers on line, then place the order at the Fastenal store. I pick up at the store a couple of days later and the store does not charge me freight.

The guys in "my" Fastenal store are great. I place piddly little orders of a few units of a bunch of items. They take time to help me choose the right ones. The info on the website and the staff are both outstanding.

Ace is good but does not have the selection that Fastenal does.
