If applying clearcoat to newly applied (but cured) paint, sand undercoat with 800 grit before recoating to ensure sufficient adhesion.

End result was no difference in looks after clear - so I will go with the light sanding with 800 grit before clear.

I just checked the tech sheet for the chromabase basecoat and you have a 24 hour clearcoat maximum window.
