Looked around for something on this and could find nothing, so here it goes:

I have a 1953 GMC 150. I am converting to 1/2T running gear with a 10-bolt rear end and leaving the front end with I-beam (but changing to 1/2T to gain the disc conversion/5-lug hub). I was wondering what the widest wheel is that I can fit in the rear without tubbing the bed? I know backspacing has a play in this (along with the width if the upgraded rear end, although the tire will eventually hit the bedside..). I will either run 15 or 16" wheels and 60/70/75 series tires (not sure yet, as I also know tire series plays into the equation). Just curious on what folks have gone with that works without modification.

This is my first post. My project basically consists of the above truck, a chevy 230 (might be a 250, will not know until I tear the head off), which I will need to rebuild and install new frame mounts, a 4-speed Saginaw (of which I will remove the original crossmember and install an aftermarket tail mount). I will consider shortening the frame as the very last effort, as the bedsides can use some work, and I do like the shortbed, we'll see....

This is a great forum, and look forward to being a part of it.

I put corvette 10 in. rally wheels with 235/75r/15 tires on my 46/1/2 ton and the just clear the wheel wells with about an inch to spare and I have 7in. rallys on the front with 225/75r/15 inch tires that clear the tie rods, I also have a 3 in. drop axle in the front and 2in. lowered in the rear,I run an S-10 rear in my truck,(see picture) as far as your motor, you can tell the difference between a 230 and a 250 by the block, its a bigger block, and has a different bellhousing,

I've got 16X8 Wheel Vintique Chrome Chevy Rallies with
LT 245 x 75R 16 Michelin Truck Radials on my 51 half ton panel
All the way around.

The back was lowered a couple of inches but still clears the wheel wells
(56 Olds Rear end)
The front is stock suspension but power discs, power steering, and GIANT
stabilizer bar (CPP)

No clearance issues, but certainly fills up the space under there!

Thanks for the feedback, looks like 8" is the limit on wheel width (I was thinking of a 15x10, but looks like it would be too wide without modification to the bed)...

I am running Bridgstone 265/70/17s on my '53 GMC on all four corners. That gives you a tire size of about 31.5 X 10.5. I don't recall now if the wheels are 9s or 10s. I have stock axles and suspension. They just fit, but I drive rough roads and sometimes off road and have had no issues with the tires rubbing.

It wouldn't be my choice of wheels and the tires are a bit tall, but they were dirt cheep smile

The offset on a Corvette wheel is different than many other wheels.
