I haven't taken the time to measure it but we ran the '48 truck on 12V for years with no problems with either the gas guage or the electric temp gauge. Just something to ponder...

Am I overlooking something obvious?

You can use a stock 6v gauge and just install a runtz resistor between the 12v wire and the gauge. Randy and 5th ave can sell you one. I've had this set up for a couple three years now and the gauge works just fine.
I also remember installing a resistor in front of the heater switch so I wouldn't burn up the heater motor.
