Hello - new to the site, and was just curious on everyones thoughts on non-factory paint colors for original restoration. I realize that if it isnt the same color as it came from the assembly line that it isnt really original, but what about variations? There are a lot of nice colors on modern cars and other itmes that would look great on an old AD pickup.

Paint it whatever color suits your tastes.

If you are dedicated to an "original restoration", you will most likely want to try to match an originally available color.

What year do you have and what colors interest you?

I dont have a stovebolt yet. Going to a guys lot Sunday, he has about 150 bolts he has collected over the years. would prefer a 51 5 window, but will see what he has to offer in my budget range. I was looking at a color called "taupe pearl chrome". If you do a serach on google images it will be a finger nail polish color. It struck me as something that I would like, just not real sure if Im going with original restoration or not. We will see. I will post some pictures of the guys lot. It is AWESOME!!

It's original or it a restoration... choose one no one gets both unless their trying to be like politicions...

modern clear coat paints have way too much gloss depth to look anywhere near original, and anything painted a 'fingernail polish color' won't be either original or a restoration, maybe a resurrection?

Like the guys have advised you Jerry or is it Joe, it’s all in which path you choose, it’s
your truck and it’s you check book. The two extremes are the purist and the customizer.
The purist wants every detail of the truck restored exactly as it was when it rolled off the
assembly line right down to the markings on the bolt heads.

At the other end you have guys that like the general look of an old truck but prefer to
customize it so it has all modern improvements of a new truck such as modern driveline
and full independent suspension, modern paints, plush interior complete with surround
sound, AC, power brakes, power steering, tinted windows electric door locks, leather
buckets and shag carpeting, sound deadener top bottom front back and side to side,
custom door panels and headliner, LED and Halogen lights. And there is much more
depending on how much you want to spend.

Then of course you have the largest group who fall somewhere in between those two.
So if you find what your looking for you’ll have to do some soul searching and decide on
how you feel. But remember this; “Anyone can cut and old truck up, but it takes a real
mechanic to restore one.”

If you are talking AD's or earlier trucks you could have any color under the sun as factory. Further you would have almost no way to document this without original purchase paperwork. See the image to back-up my statement.

1950 salesman order book shows two-tone or special colors as apply to zone. Chevrolet had advertised two-tone or customer colors as early as 1941 model trucks. Paint is a personal preference for sure, there are some standard factory colors that I would never paint a truck because I don't like them. Paint is also a significant investment so you should be happy with it, this is your truck and your money after all.

"any color under the sun" that existed back then, I don't think the factory had any 'pearl' paints

I said color, not pearl, not metal flake, I am so sorry I should have specified every color available in the 1940's and 1950's. Your nit picking is a distraction from the conversation, but it is consistent.

sorry to pick nits Brad, but jerryjoe did specify "non-factory paint colors like taupe pearl chrome", just keeping things relevant to the question I know it was possible back in the day to order any color available in any multi-color pattern for individual companies desires, and I suspect most old timers here do as well .... but for me one of the most glaring 'errors' in 'restorations' is the use of modern ultra high gloss paints - nothing against any color, but it immediately pinpoints a non-original truck or car

Whew! and here I thought that going with Black/Red was going to be what gives me away!

In my effort to fight the current I chose non original stock... with some wrinkles removed.
I figure this truck has all those 350 clipped and shortened adventures still ahead of it if I just respect it some now.

So epoxy primer seemed like respectful. but it was the first step down that slippery slop and now this harlot just keeps taking and taking... even now she calls out "come paint me, it's raining out and the air is clean. bury me in thick black waves of urethane."
